How it is calculated

We start from real sales of 480 of the items that move the most money, each weighted by the money it moves: knives and gloves, which make up most of the money traded, therefore count more than a skin worth a few cents. Five measures come out of it, equally weighted (20% each):

  • Momentum The market price index compared with its 60-day average.
  • New highs vs new lows Items at their highest price in 90 days, against those at their lowest.
  • Money on gainers The share of money traded on rising items versus falling ones over 14 days.
  • Market calm The size of the index's declines over 20 days compared with its usual, like the VIX for stocks.
  • Distance from peak How far the index has fallen from its 90-day high.

Each measure is scored from 0 to 100 by how far it sits from its usual level over the past year (50 = as usual), then the five are averaged. The calculation is redone every day on real CSFloat sales.
